People now have access to a wide variety of leisure activities that they can experience in a variety of locations, so people are able to take advantage of the leisure activities that they find most enjoyable. Expansion of leisure activities and development of leisure travel options continue to generate new leisure opportunities for people. During the 1950s, the United States had one of the lowest rates of leisure travel. Today, there is more leisure travel than ever before.
There are more leisure activities available than ever before. Lifestyle changes dedicated to increasing leisure time, decreasing time spent in the workplace, and increasing options for leisure travel have created new opportunities for people to focus on the activities that they find most personally satisfying. The expansion of the automobile and the urbanization of the United States and many other countries also played a role in the development of the leisure-time lifestyle. The growth of leisure-time lifestyles also came about because of educational opportunities. Those with the opportunity to go to school and learn the skills necessary to become a productive member of society were able to gain the skills needed to "self-actualize" by spending their time in productive pursuits.
However, the leisure-time lifestyle has changed dramatically in the last 50 years. The availability of televisions and computers and the ease of obtaining information about what is going on around the world have made the leisure-time lifestyle more accessible. The importance of education has also decreased, which has led to an increase in the use of other leisure-time activities.
